FAQ

  • How long can I let the sod sit on the pallet from when I receive it?

We recommend laying your sod down within 24 hours from when you receive it. If you let the sod sit on the pallet for more than 24 hours you increase the risk of burning and molding of the sod. In hot weather, protect unlaid sod by placing pallets in shaded areas or covering them with moist burlap, and/or sprinkling. Do not cover it with a tarp, which will act like an oven and burn the sod.

  • How should I lay the sod?

Begin installing sod along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Push edges and ends against each other tightly, without stretching. Avoid gaps or overlaps. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a large, sharp knife to trim corners and around sprinkler heads. Avoid laying small strips at outer edges, as they will not retain moisture as easily.

  • When should I start watering my newly sodded lawn?

Begin watering new turfgrass sod within a half hour after it is laid on the soil.

  • How much water should I apply to my newly sodded lawn for the first few weeks?

Apply at least 2 to 3 cm. (1 inch) of water so that the soil beneath the sod is very wet. Ideally, the soil 7 to 10 cm. (3 to 4 inches) below the surface should be moist. Lift a corner of a piece of sod to check the ground underneath.

In summer we recommend watering at least 2xs a day for 4-6 weeks. Run a cycle of each zone for 10-15 minutes then start the cycle again immediately to get a nice deep soak. Do this 2x-3xs a day. You don’t want the ground to be soggy so if it is cooler than 80 degrees outside, then less watering is needed.

  • What fertilizer should I use on my sodded lawn going forward and when?

We recommend using two types of fertilizer for the Spring/Fall and Summer months. Triple 16 starter fertilizer for the Spring/Fall months and a 25-3-3 blend for the Summer months. Check with your local home and garden center for these products.
